Peter had a career in the construction industry some years ago, this came to an end after some personal circumstances and Peter developed issues with alcohol, which spiralled and ended with Peter accessing a 26 weeks residential treatment programme to help combat his addiction.
After coming out of the treatment programme Peter wanted to help other people struggling in similar situations and took a job as a Key Worker, but Peter wanted more hours and structure so decided that he wanted to go back into the construction industry.
P started our Constructing Lives Together program in September, at this point P had been out of work for 9 months and attended our Employability training, followed by our CSCS training, which he successfully completed.
Peter has gone on to secure employment with a local firm working as a labourer. Peter contacted us after the program to share the following feedback:
“Firstly, I would just like to thank the team at Weston College for the help and support I received and for giving me the opportunity to take part in the CSCS course. I’m loving the job!”A
Karen came through the CLT last year and is now employed as a full-time Assistant Logistics Manager At Willmott Dixon.
After a successful nine year military career, Karen and her partner laid down roots and started a family unaware to her at the time that it would 16 years until she would resume her career.
Initially, Karen found work in the office of a construction company. They realised that her passion and previous experience as a logistics officer meant she would be more suitable on site.
18 months later, although armed with some initial experience and exposure, her career in construction hadn’t progressed and contract delays had meant that Karen was out of work, still lacking key qualifications and unsure about her next move.
It was at this crossroads that Karen came on to the radar of Willmott Dixon and Acorn Recruitment.
Karen Said “I felt a bit stuck. I had enjoyed my first foray into construction but didn’t really have anything to show for it. I reached out to Weston College thinking maybe I would look at some trade qualifications, maybe carpentry.
That was when the college reached out to me to tell me about the constructing lives together programme.”
During the programme, Acorn and Willmott Dixon ran career talks and one-to-one sessions and was clear from those conversations that Karen was someone we could help.
Two weeks quickly turned into an extra three weeks on a paid basis because Karen had performed so well. It took just those five weeks for the team to create an ongoing position for her.
After six months, Karen’s hard work was rewarded with a full-time permanent contract with Willmott Dixon. From having known nothing of the workings of a large construction site at the start she was now playing a crucial role in the day to day running of the site logistics for one of the biggest projects in Bristol.
“I am grateful to everyone involved, Weston College, Willmott Dixon, Acorn, the CLT programme. It couldn’t have happened if the programme wasn’t there allowing me to do my CSCS training and brokering the opportunity to get on site with WD.”
“I’m just going to give it my all, keep learning and hopefully once the internals of the building are in full swing, I can keep learning and work towards the skills and experience needed to be a Build Manager. Hopefully this is just the start.”
Willmott Dixon will support Karen every step of the way!
